- W2283118538 abstract "A study conducted in a rural area of India over a decade reveals an improvement in the socioeconomic status of families, yet the effect of an increase in monetary income could not be seen on diet and nutritional status because of the rise in prices of food and nonfood items. Yet, a declining trend in the mortality pattern of preschool children was observed over the years. As part of the same study, information collected on the reproductive performance of rural mothers in both 1961 and 1974 is reported here. Data available on 138 mothers in 1961 regarding their reproductive performance was compared with that collected on 101 mothers (including 42 immigrant mothers) in 1974. A comparison also was made regarding infant and child deaths in the 2 study periods. Information collected about the fertility pattern of the same mothers (33) in both the study periods also was compared. There was no difference in the age at 1st delivery of mothers in the 2 study periods, but the duration of the marriage was comparatively less in 1974, primarily due to the younger age of mothers. A significant increase in the percentage of hospital deliveries was observed in 1974. Mothers studied in 1974 had a significantly lower fertility as compared with those in 1961, mostly due to immigrant mothers. No mother had adopted family planning in 1961, but about 9% of the mothers in 1974 had undergone a tubal ligation (after 7-8 deliveries). There was a significant increase in the percentage of literate mothers in 1974 as comapred with those in 1961, and this increase was seen more in the younger age group of mothers in 1974. When the live births/mother by age group were analyzed, the overall decrease ws mainly attributable to the influence of immigrant mothers as well as to the younger age group of mothers among the local residents in 1974. This trend was not observed among the older age group of others in the 2 study periods. The avarage spacing between live births was 2.7 years in 1961, 2.9 years in 1974, and 2.8 years for the immigrant mothers. The differences in spacing between live births according to parity were insignificant. No child was weaned below the age of 1 year in both study periods. The percentage of children who were breast-fed at the time of contact consituted 76.2% in 1961 and 75% in 1974. The number of live births/mother was 6.4 in 1974 as compared with 4.2 in 1961. This trend was similar to that observed among the rural mothers in India. Infant and child deaths/mother also were similar to that ovserved in the general population of mothers studied in 1961 and 1974." @default.
