- W2283323138 abstract "Pure titanium and titanium alloys are in use for substituting damaged parts in the human body. The positive properties, i. e. excellent biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance, are impaired in some applications by an insufficient mechanical stability. This problem is discussed for pure titanium for dental applications and for titanium alloys used in joint prostheses. In dental applications a core part is usually covered with a ceramic plating for better looking as well as for wear protection. A number of processing steps are necessary which change the microstructure and the surface state which may be critical for the part's life time. It is shown that the positive fatigue behaviour of drawn rod material is significantly degraded, while the rather poor fatigue strength of cast material is improved. The wear exerted by friction against the polymer part is often the reason for failure of artificial joints. By implantation of nitrogen or carbon ions the resistance against wear is significantly increased. The results of research which have been obtained in cooperation with a number of institutions lead to a better understanding of damage mechanisms and of the positive effect of ion implantation on lifetime restricting wear. The results also show the synergism of wear and corrosion which is typical for the failure of artificial joints. The work reviewed in this paper yields a basis for the use of the titanium alloy TiA16V4 in highly loaded joint parts and for the substitution of alloying elements which may cause allergic reactions in modern titanium alloys designed for applications in human medicine." @default.
