We compared the accuracy of prostate needle biopsy, fine needle prostatic aspiration and transurethral resection biopsies of the prostate to detect the presence or absence of transitional cell carcinoma involving the prostate in 25 men undergoing radical cystectomy, of whom 40 per cent had transitional cell carcinoma of the prostate. The accuracy of the 3 detection methods was 20, 40 and 90 per cent, respectively. If any 1 of the 3 tests was positive all patients with transitional cell prostatic cancer were correctly identified. These tests should be performed in high risk patients, including those with transitional cell carcinoma in situ of the bladder, or with a positive urine cytology study and a cystoscopically as well as biopsy proved normal bladder urothelium. © 1989 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byvon Rundstedt F, Lerner S, Godoy G, Amiel G, Wheeler T, Truong L and Shen S (2018) Usefulness of Transurethral Biopsy for Staging the Prostatic Urethra before Radical CystectomyJournal of Urology, VOL. 193, NO. 1, (58-63), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2015.Nieuwenhuijzen J, Meinhardt W and Horenblas S (2018) Clinical Outcomes After Sexuality Preserving Cystectomy and Neobladder (Prostate Sparing Cystectomy) in 44 PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 179, NO. 5S, (S35-S38), Online publication date: 1-May-2008.NIEUWENHUIJZEN J, MEINHARDT W and HORENBLAS S (2018) CLINICAL OUTCOMES AFTER SEXUALITY PRESERVING CYSTECTOMY AND NEOBLADDER (PROSTATE SPARING CYSTECTOMY) IN 44 PATIENTSJournal of Urology, VOL. 173, NO. 4, (1314-1317), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2005.HORENBLAS S, MEINHARDT W, IJZERMAN W and MOONEN L (2018) SEXUALITY PRESERVING CYSTECTOMY AND NEOBLADDER: INITIAL RESULTSJournal of Urology, VOL. 166, NO. 3, (837-840), Online publication date: 1-Sep-2001.DONAT S, WEI D, McGUIRE M and HERR H (2018) THE EFFICACY OF TRANSURETHRAL BIOPSY FOR PREDICTING THE LONG-TERM CLINICAL IMPACT OF PROSTATIC INVASIVE BLADDER CANCERJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 5, (1580-1584), Online publication date: 1-May-2001.DONAT S, GENEGA E, HERR H and REUTER V (2018) MECHANISMS OF PROSTATIC STROMAL INVASION IN PATIENTS WITH BLADDER CANCER: CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCEJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 4, (1117-1120), Online publication date: 1-Apr-2001.NSEYO U, SHUMAKER B, KLEIN E and SUTHERLAND K (2018) PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY USING PORFIMER SODIUM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CYSTECTOMY IN PATIENTS WITH REFRACTORY TRANSITIONAL CELL CARCINOMA IN SITU OF THE BLADDERJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 1, (39-44), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1998.Montie J, Edson Pontes J, Parulkar B and Selby T (2018) W-Stapled Ileal Neo-Bladder Formed Entirely with Absorbable StaplesJournal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 5, (1188-1192), Online publication date: 1-May-1994.Schwalb D, Herr H and Fair W (2018) The Management of Clinically Unconfirmed Positive Urinary CytologyJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 6, (1751-1756), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1993.Sakamoto N, Tsuneyoshi M, Naito S and Kumazawa J (2018) An Adequate Sampling of the Prostate to Identify Prostatic Involvement by Urothelial Carcinoma in Bladder Cancer PatientsJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 2, (318-321), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1993.Matzkin H, Soloway M and Hardeman S (2018) Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the ProstateJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 5, (1207-1212), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1991.Soloway M (2018) Editorial CommentsJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 6, (1512-1512), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1991.Hardeman S and Soloway M (2018) Urethral Recurrence Following Radical CystectomyJournal of Urology, VOL. 144, NO. 3, (666-669), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1990.Terris M, Villers A and Freiha F (2018) Transrectal Ultrasound Appearance of Transitional Cell Carcinoma Involving the ProstateJournal of Urology, VOL. 143, NO. 5, (953-956), Online publication date: 1-May-1990.Montie J (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 144, NO. 3, (669-669), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1990.
