- W228360627 abstract "Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used by polymer processing industries in order to evaluate polymeric fluid flows. A successful computational code must provide reliable predictions (modeling) in a fast and efficient way (simulation). In the modeling phase, the key point is the choice of an appropriate constitutive equation. To solve the model equations, a large number of methodologies was found in the literature, each one having advantages and disadvantages. The present work proposes a new methodology to solve the governing equations of viscoelastic fluid flows. It is based on the finite volume method with collocated arrangement of the variables, using high order approximations to linear and nonlinear average fluxes in the interfaces and in the nonlinear terms obtained from the discretization of the constitutive equations. In this methodology, the average values of the variable in the volumes are used during the resolution, and the punctual values are recovered in the post-processing step by deconvolution of the average values. The nonlinear system resulting from the discretization of the equations are solved simultaneously, using the Newton’s method. The methodology is used to solve some Newtonian and viscoelastic flows, and the results obtained are showed. The Oldroyd-B and Simplified Phan-Thien-Tanner models are used to describe the rheological behavior of the viscoelastic fluid. According to the results, it can be seen that the methodology is promising, having some advantages compared with the conventional methodologies based on the finite volume method. The actual implementation of the developed methodology is restricted to uniform meshes and, consequently, solutions for problems with complex geometries, which require a localized mesh refinement, were obtained only for low Weissenberg numbers, due to computational cost limitation. This restriction can be outlined, and so, the methodology can become competitive." @default.
