- W2283802013 abstract "The premiere performance of The Pilgrim's Progress by composer Harvey Brough took place on Sunday 23 March 2014, conducted by the composer. The work is a dramatic cantata for large forces and was performed in the magnificent Great Hall of Bedford School.Funded by Bedford School Trust, this first performance brought together 180 singers and musicians. The choir was made up of Bedford School Choral Society; Bel Canto - Bedford Girl's School; Bedford Preparatory School Senior Choir; Bedford Girls' School Transition Choir; and Pilgrim's Pre-Preparatory School Choir. They were joined by Voces 8 (a professional vocal octet) and two professional soloists, bass Dingle Yandell and baritone Marcus Farnsworth, who sang the parts of Christian (the Pilgrim) and Bunyan (the Narrator), respectively. Music was provided by The Phoenix Orchestra, a fourteen-piece ensemble with piano and organ. This first performance of Brough's latest community cantata was a fine occasion. The libretto was well crafted by James Runcie, a well-known novelist and playwright, who is also a film, radio and television producer/director, and is currently Head of Literature and the Spoken Word at the Southbank Centre in London. Runcie blended seamlessly the Bunyan story of Pilgrim's journey (mostly from Part One but with some episodes from Part Two) with well-known hymn texts such as Luther's 'A safe stronghold our God is still'; words from Psalm 23, 'The Lord is my shepherd'; and the Dies Irae from the Requiem mass. The sequential nature of the Pilgrim's story makes it hard for any composer (including Ralph Vaughan Williams, who spent forty-five years writing his opera, The Pilgrim's Progress) to achieve musical and dramatic unity. But Runcie's libretto worked well and has allowed Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress to evolve. As Harvey Brough put it in his Programme Note, Runcie '(necessarily) chopped the book back to its essential story and then added various other elements . . . to make a really well-rounded libretto, retaining all the inspirational and iconic parts of the original but giving plenty of opportunity for choruses'. One might hope that his success with the text might even spur other composers on to further musical settings of The Pilgrim's Progress.Harvey Brough is an exceptionally versatile musician, whose work brings together a wide range of styles from classical to jazz, and who works as a performer, arranger, conductor and producer, as well as composer. He neatly reflected the mood and context of each episode though sometimes in surprising ways. …" @default.
