- W2284037356 abstract "Several studies which explore the relationship between oral contraceptive (OC) use and thromboembolic disorders are reviewed. Searle Report in 1962 maintained that there was no demonstrable causal relationship between use of Enovid and thromboembolism. The Final Enovid Report published in 1963 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration substantiated the findings of the Searle Report; no statistically significant difference in the incidence of thromboembolic disorders between the Enovid group and a control group could be demonstrated. report did not publicize that the incidence of thromboembolic disorders was significantly more frequent among users of Enovid who were 35-44 years of age. 3 British studies are discussed. A study of 61216 patient-years by the Royal College of General Practitioners showed a doubled incidence of thromboembolism among OC users. frequency of thrombosis increased with age and gravidity. A report by the British Medical Research Council showed that OC use was significantly more frequent among women suffering from thromboembolic disorders than among the control patients. A study by the British Department of Health which compared 1024 cases of thromboembolic disorders with 998 control patients showed a statistically significant relationship between OC use and thromboembolic disorders. Scandinavian studies show a causal relationship between OC use and thromboembolic disorders. In spite of the increased risk of thromboembolism particularly of venous thrombosis which accompanies OC use the benefits of hormonal contraception should be taken into consideration. OCs should be used with caution and the incidences of thrombosis accompanying OC use should be reported." @default.
