- W228412789 abstract "ISRAEL Operation Solomon: Daring Rescue of the Ethiopian Jews, by Stephen Spector. Oxford, UK and New York: Oxford University Press, 2006. xv + 195 pages. Appends, to p. 204. Notes to p. 242. Gloss, to p. 250. Bibl. to p. 268. Index to p. 279. $15.95. Reviewed by Eddie Bitches As most historians acknowledge, only by knowing the author's background can one fairly judge the veracity of his work product. Stephen Spector acknowledges that he was not a participant in the May 26, 1991 rescue of Jews in Ethiopia to Israel. But he never discloses his bias - at least not directly. He says that he is indebted to the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) employees, specifically thanking the JDC for giving him unrestricted access to use of their archives (p. xii). He was also given access to the internal documents of the American Association for Ethiopian Jews (AAEJ). It is important to note that both groups did not support the rescue of the Falash Mura, practicing Jews, who were descendents of Jews who may have converted to Christianity or were simply assimilated. Mr. Spector did not trust his translator because Israeli officials told him that the translator did not tell the truth; as proof, the translator's wife's family included many Falash Mura (p. xiv). title of the book includes the phrase The Daring Rescue of the Ethiopian Yet, what about those who could have been rescued but were left behind? Mr. Spector prefers to focus on such issues as the form and amount that the Ethiopian government would receive to allow the Jews to leave (pp. 110-166). This decision regarding the Falash Mura deserves much more attention than the author devotes to it. Spector acknowledges that the 3,000 Falash Mura in Addis Ababa could have been brought out easily with no additional cost (p. 170). There was strong support from the Sephardic Chief Rabbi, who stated explicitly that these people were Jews. Many within the ruling Israeli governing coalition, including Ariel Sharon, supported this, and a cable instructing such action was received. Then, apparently Israeli Ambassador Uri Lubrani made further inquiries, and the decision was reversed. Spector interviewed Lubrani extensively (p. 69). Why did he not press Lubrani, who became the hero of the Operation (p. 181), as to what actually happened? Many believe that it was the Jewish Agency chair Simcha Dinitz, Micha Feldman (Israeli Counsel in charge of determining eligibility), and even Lubrani himself who played critical roles in the decision to leave behind the 3,000. …" @default.
