A rational basis for assessing the safety effects of land use proposals is described. It is based on a model of crashes at T junctions, modified for the driveway situation. Driveway trips and frontage traffic flows are used to predict average crash rates for typical urban situations. The way other factors affect the crash rate is described, and where sufficient information is available, correction factors are suggested. Further research would be desirable to formally calibrate the model and to add other factors that at present use engineering judgement and first principles." @default.
