- W2284551801 abstract "With the rapid growth in passenger transportation through aviationprojected to continue into the future, it is incumbent on aerospaceengineers to seek ways to reduce the negative impact of airlineroperation on the environment. Key metrics to address include noise,fuel consumption, Carbon Dioxide and Nitrous Oxide emissions, andcontrail formation. The research presented in this paper generatesnew aircraft trajectories to reduce these metrics, and compares themwith typical scheduled airline operated flights.Results and analysis of test cases on trajectory optimization arepresented using an in-house aircraft trajectory optimizationframework created under the European Clean Sky Joint TechnologyInitiative, Systems for Green Operation Integrated TechnologyDemonstrator. The software tool comprises an optimizer core andrelatively high fidelity models of the aircraft's flight pathperformance, air traffic control constraints, propulsion and othersystems. The tool includes models to predict noise, emissions andcontrail formation.The results report horizontal and vertical trajectories for a long haulflight from London Heathrow to Colombo in Sri Lanka. Particularstudies have been conducted on contrails formation during flight inthe cruise segment, as well as the impact of conventional and moreelectric systems penalties on the aircraft's performance. Minimumnoise and minimum fuel burn criteria are objectives in theoptimization of the departure and arrival segments. Minimum timeand minimum fuel burn are used in the optimization of the en-routesegments, together with the contrails optimized routes forcomparative assessment.The solutions of optimized trajectories are presented in terms of flightprofile charts for the altitude and speed. The environmental gainsbetween the investigated criteria, in each flight segment, arepresented based on the results obtained using the framework." @default.
