- W2285142209 abstract "A study of discrimination learning using albinorats was undertaken. Theory holds that organisms preferconditions where stimulus cues provide informationpredicting forthcoming reward or nonreward over conditionswhere this information is not provided. In 1952, Wyckoffperformed an experiment with pigeons in which he attemptedto isolate the behavior by which attention leads todiscrimination learning. He called this attention behaviorthe observing response. He concluded from his results thatinformation predicting reward or nonreward reinforcesobserving. In 1956, Prokasy performed a similar experimentusing albino rats in an E-shaped maze. Results showed thatthe subjects preferred a condition allowing them to predictforthcoming reward or nonreward over a condition that didnot.Subsequent research indicated that this preferencedepended on a number of variables. Manipulating thesevariables led to results including preference forpredictable condition, no preference for either condition,or preference for unpredictable condition. The present study examined the effect of extraeffort on preference for predictable conditions. Fourgroups of rats were run in an E-maze. One group replicatedthe Prokasy study. Two groups had extra lengths added tothe predictable side. One group was used as a control tofind if the extra length was discernible to the subjects. Results of this experiment did not support thetheory that information predicting reward or nonreward isreinforcing. Extra length added to the predictable sidesignificantly reduced the preference for that side.Rather, subjects appeared to choose the condition thatprovided the greatest chance of reward with the leastamount of effort." @default.
