- W2285491807 abstract "The warnings concerning potential complications caused by the oral contraceptive pill are discussed. Thromboembolism myocardial infarction mesenteric thrombosis and infarction elective surgery congenital abnormalities effects on the fetus liver tumors cancer postpill amenorrhea and hypertension are the major topics presented. The relationship between the pill and thromboembolism is controversial but the pill should be withheld from women with a personal or family history of thromboembolism or cardiovascular disease and from those with thrombophlebitis varicose veins with stasis cardiac disease leukemia and polycythemia. Mann et al. report a 3-fold increase of risks of myocardial infarction in women aged 40-44 years old who are on the pill. In cases of mesenteric thrombosis and infarction cessation of oral contraceptives may prevent surgery. A woman on oral contraceptives has a 3-fold to 40 fold risk of developing postoperative deep venous thrombosis. There has never been any statistically significant change in the incidence of congenital abnormalities in babies of women on the pill. There are no data to show that prior use of oral contraceptives alters the risk of chromosomally abnormal infants. There has been no evidence of an association between pill use and the development of liver cancer but the risk of developing benign liver tumors increases with length of time on the pill. Large surveys have failed to show any statistically significant increase in atypical histology in pill users compared with nonusers. 2 or 3 out of 100 women on the pill develop postpill amenorrhea and 1/2 of them had some failure of menstruation before treatment. The risk of raised blood pressure is greater in those who are at higher risk for developing hypertension; periodic monitoring of blood pressure is mandatory." @default.
