- W2286202365 abstract "The effective management of knowledge is now recognisedas a vehicle through which the construction industrycan address its need for innovation and improved businessperformance. The failure to capture and transfer projectknowledge, which is usually buried in unread reports andarcane filing systems, or lost because people move on, leadsto the increased risk of ‘reinventing the wheel’, wastedactivity, and impaired project performance. Knowledge istherefore considered vital in creating competitive advantagein the new economy. Much of the growth in manyglobal firms has been credited to knowledge, as newtechnologies and innovations are applied to the market andworkplace. Knowledge management is therefore increasinglyseen as an integral part of an organization’s competitivestrategy as it facilitates continuous improvement throughlearning and innovation. This is now increasingly recognisedby most sectors of industry, with many organisationsappointing a Knowledge Manager or Business ImprovementManager, with responsibility for articulating andimplementing the organisation’s knowledge managementstrategy. This paper argues that knowledge management isequally important in development projects and advocatesthe application of knowledge management practices tothese projects. It introduces the key phases in knowledgemanagement (creation, storage, sharing, modification, etc.)and explores how these can be implemented in developmentprojects. The application of knowledge managementto development projects is expected to result in numerousbenefits including the transfer of lessons learned from oneproject to another, improved transfer of knowledge betweendeveloped countries and developing countries, andbetter management of human resources. This paper startswith a review of key knowledge management concepts, andoutlines some of the characteristics of development projects. It then discusses the potential for knowledge managementin development projects and concludes with a summary ofthe practical benefits to be gained." @default.
