- W2286707158 abstract "The development and maintenance of infrastructure within sensitive coastal and estuarine environments offers a series of unique challenges. Dredging, as a high value and highly visible activity closely associated with the construction and maintenance of ports, typically generates a deal of scrutiny at the approval phase of a project. It is therefore essential to facilitate sufficient understanding of key coastal processes, and the ambient conditions, in order to reduce the potential for projects to be cancelled or postponed. The authors of this paper have been involved with a number of port development projects where approvals were required prior to the commencement of dredging. In several of these cases, an Impact Assessment Study has also been required. The means of allowing approvals to be obtained have centred on a combination of sound planning practices, an understanding of the approval process, and informed technical studies. This paper addresses all three aspects, whilst focusing on the use of hydrodynamic models as a highly important tool in the process. The application of sophisticated hydrodynamic models offers a means to better understand the key processes within a coastal waterbody, simulate these processes, and to therefore predict dredging impacts before they occur. The consequent benefit is the increased opportunity to plan for that impact, whether by means of higher levels of protection (where required), or by altering the proposed dredging process itself. In either case, decisions can be made before the dredging contractor is engaged. This also provides a benefit to the approval process. Furthermore, once a model is established, it can then be readily applied to the assessment and management of the entire coastal region surrounding the port." @default.
