- W2286737104 abstract "an increase of 2 to 4 o C over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and sub-surface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to rise in sea level and reduction in resources. Groundwater resources are related to climate change through the direct interaction with surface water resources, such as lakes and rivers, and indirectly through the recharge process. The direct effect of climate change on groundwater resources depends upon the change in the volume and distribution of groundwater recharge (Singh and Kumar, 2009). Groundwater constitutes about 95 per cent of the freshwater on our planet, making it fundamental to human life and economic development (CWP, 2005). For almost all the water needs of the country, groundwater is by far the most important water resource. Over 2 billion people depend on aquifers for their drinking water (UNEP, 2003). Forty per cent of the world’s food is produced by irrigated agriculture that relies largely on groundwater. But groundwater is being depleted and degraded in many places, and as Burke et al. (1999) noted, most of the major aquifer depletion and degradation has occurred in a very short span of time–over the past 50 years (Sophocleous, 2003). The availability of this natural resource has been taken for granted. Increasing groundwater use and pollution generation has crossed the" @default.
