- W2286761844 abstract "The present paper focuses on diachronic personal identity and the question of which criteria it is that allow us to perceive a person as identical throughout time. According to the tradition of philosophy, memory and the continuing existence of the brain have been proposed as criteria of personal identity: a person is the same at present time (t2) and former time (t1) when she (correctly) remembers and/or has the same brain at t1 and t2. This implies that (diachronic) personal identity can be reduced to psychic (memory) or physical phenomena (brain). The discussions in the realm of philosophy of recent decades have revealed that a reduction of personal identity to brain/mind is not possible without antinomies. We argue for a non-reductionist account of personal identity which evades the systematic and purely descriptive approach of the cognitive neurosciences. According to this line of thought, personal identity should be discussed in the context of narratives. Via active participation in a linguistic community, a person learns the meaning of person as well as the moral context which makes a fixation of their identity possible." @default.
