- W2287834102 abstract "Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality among women in westernized societies. Although the mortality rates for this disease have been markedly lower in many Oriental countries, immigrants to the West rapidly acquire the increased incidence of their adopted country. This has led to the hypothesis that the increased incidence seen in the West is not a result of genetic differences, but rather of environmental exposures. One of the most obvious differences between Eastern and Western societies has been diet, although countries like Japan are now exhibiting a clear trend toward consumption of a more Western diet. Among the dietary differences are the lower consumption of high-fat foods and total caloric intake in the East, and the higher consumption of dietary fiber and soy-based food products. In experimental animal models, each of these differences, when studied alone, can significantly influence mammary carcinogenesis. Exposure to specific pesticides and pollutants also has been suggested to contribute to breast cancer risk. However, it is often difficult to assess relative differences in exposure to these compounds in such international studies.KeywordsBreast CancerMammary GlandBreast Cancer RiskAfrican American WomanIncrease Breast Cancer RiskThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
