- W2287978967 abstract "YES, I HAVE A CHANCE TO LEARN BY DOING ” experiences related to clinical practice for PBL students in physiotherapy. Sanna Spets. University of Jyvaskyla. Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences / Department of Health Sciences. Spring 2005. Master’s Thesis in Physiotherapy. 80 pages, 5 appendices. The aim of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of physiotherapy students during clinical practice. The research material was gathered from last year’s students in South Carelia Polytechnic‘s Degree Programme for Physiotherapy using theme interviews in small groups. The Faculty’s curriculum is based on the principles of Problem Based Learning (PBL). The data of this study was also collected from the journals of students and the material was analysed using the method of content analysis. Students felt their strengths to be in communication, assessment and data collection skills, though they had some difficulties in structuring information. During clinical practice, students also felt unsure about their knowledge and skill levels, especially manual skills. Clinical practice was found to be important as a basis for moving into the physiotherapy profession. The need for therapy skills and how to develop them was highlighted during clinical practice. Problem Based Learning was considered to be a demanding and still somewhat unclear way to study. The students hoped that the faculty might develop better functional models for practice and ways to provide support for data structuring as a basis for physiotherapy work. The students’ function in clinical practice was based on de facto practices and their mentor’s instructions. Their own learning objectives did not actively guide the actual field work. Students felt that the mentor’s instructions supported the students’ own ability to solve problems, but that the amount was marginal. The teacher’s role was unclear, but self and peer guidance was also used during training. Assessment situations were considered to be constructive and flexible. Students felt that school study and field work did not combine in a solid package. The results of this study may be used to help evaluate problem based learning challenges from the student’s point of view, and may be utilized when developing teaching lessons and practical field work. Students had similar strengths and weaknesses when compared to students of traditional learning methods at polytechnic schools. The biggest developmental goals include improving manual skills and data analysis skills, giving more attention to learning goals, clarifying assessment, decreasing uncertainty and clarifying PBL itself. One of the goals of problem base learning is to minimize the gap between school and field work, and based on the experiences related in this thesis, that goal has not yet been realized." @default.
