- W2288403090 abstract "Approximately 250,000 people in America live with spinal cord injury. However, the overall employment rate is dismal, at roughly 35 %. This chapter focuses on recommended or proven interventions and practices for improving vocational outcomes following spinal cord injury. Epidemiology of spinal cord injury is briefly reviewed. The authors provide a detailed overview of medical and rehabilitation issues, such as neurogenic bowel and bladder, pressure ulcers, spasticity, and impaired arm function, which need to be optimally managed to allow persons with spinal cord injury to enter the workforce. The status of current research support for vocational rehabilitation in spinal cord injury, including review of the literature, case examples, and results from a recently completed multicenter trial of a supported employment model, is discussed. Finally, best real world practice issues and examples are discussed to assist rehabilitation professionals, team members, and administrators in their efforts to assist persons with spinal cord injury to obtain and maintain employment." @default.
