• W2288514217 abstract "In 1973-74, while doing research on late Ottoman history in the Prime Ministry Archives in Istanbul, I was struck by the wealth of documents on Lebanon. At every opportunity since that time, I have returned to that material and tried to supplement it with information from other sources. My initial intention was to understand the reasons for the obvious importance the Ottoman government attributed to Lebanon. Eventually the challenge of understanding the problems of state formation in Lebanon began to guide my research; the result is the present work. Many people have contributed to it over the years. Responsibility for errors is exclusively mine, but I would like to acknowledge at least some of the help I have received. Hayri Mutlucag graciously initiated me into the labyrinth of nineteenth-century Ottoman documents; I owe him a special debt of gratitude. My first work on Lebanon was a docentship thesis, written in 1981. I fondly remember the moral and material support given me by my colleagues at Bosphorus University; above all, Metin Kunt, Zafer Toprak, Yalcin Koc, Selim Deringil, and Taha parla. The members of my jury, Professors Munir Aktepe, Abdurrahman Cayci, Nejat Goyunc, Ercumend Kuran, Mubahat Kutukoglu, and Sihabeddin Tekindag, provided me with useful feedback and enthusiastic support, for which I am grateful. A year of residency fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin in 1985-86 enabled me to resume my work on Lebanon after a long interruption.
