- W2288713521 abstract "This chapter discusses the specificity of pituitary cells and regulation of their activities. Pituitary hormones are synthesized and secreted by well-defined specific cells in the pituitary. These cells have been identified by the following criteria: size, shape, location, affinity of specific granules for staining, immunohistochemical techniques, and granule size, shape, and location. In summarizing some of the general properties such as common cellular features and the ability of certain cells to synthesize hormones from the same ancestor molecule, the genesis of specific pituitary cells from three main groups of cells can be considered: (1) adrenocorticotropin (ACTH ) and melanocyte-stimulating hormones (MSH) cells, (2) luteotropic hormone (LTH) and somatotropin hormones (STH) cells, and (3) glycoprotein hormone-producing cells. This classification of cell types can be used to understand the mechanisms involved in the following processes: regulation of specific cells during differentiation, specificity during ontogenesis, cell interrelationships and properties during various stages of activity and in the case of tumorigenesis. In considering the mechanisms regulating hormone release and synthesis, two main high-affinity binding sites, termed receptors, for hormones are proposed: (1) receptors for the protein hormones located at the surface of the plasma membrane of endocrine cells, and (2) receptors for steroids that are components of target cell cytoplasm and nuclei." @default.
