- W2288726710 abstract "Clean Air Act regulations coupled with the very real need to reduce air pollution in the Los Angeles basin have driven electric vehicle programs at major automobile manufacturers for several years and the sale of quotas of ``zero-emission`` vehicles (ZEVs) in California is now mandated by state law. At present only all-electric or fuel cell powered vehicles can qualify under the zero-emission standard and the fuel cell vehicles will have to carry hydrogen on board because the emissions from an on-board reformer of methanol or methane may not allow the standards to be met. Similar regulations are now contemplated by a number of northeastern states and are currently under review by the EPA. The range of electric vehicles relying solely on batteries is severely limited by the current state of secondary battery technology. The use of hybrid vehicles which can operate on fuel beyond the boundaries of ZEV compliance zones offers a plausible alternative path. A large hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) program involving the three principal US automakers is developing the component and vehicle technologies to implement several strategies. High power AMTEC system designs have the potential to assist in meeting the standards in a variety of scenarios including ``rangemore » extended``, series and parallel hybrid configurations. This paper describes (1) an analysis of AMTEC performance capabilities in the HEV context; (2) initial experiments on a multi-tube cell used to investigate design conditions and (3) a conceptual design of an AMTEC unit capable of 15 kWe output for cruise conditions with peak output capability of 55 kWe.
