- W2289063919 abstract "Diatomites are formed in both marine and freshwater systems, where the process of diatom formation and preservation conspire to produce diatomaceous sediments. Diatomite formation seems to have been most prevalent in the Miocene, the Plio-Pleistocene, and during the early to middle Holocene periods. Because of the properties conferred to diatomite sediment by a high silica content and fine-grained texture, extensive deposits are often exploited commercially. Such deposits are either marine or freshwater in origin and terrestrial exposures are mined in both hemispheres of the globe. Commercial extraction of diatomites began less than 200 years ago but diatomites have been exploited for building products since the first millennium bc. Diatomites have a variety of modern uses and recently they are proving to be a useful additive for improving the quality of cements and other building products. Less exploited is their value for the reconstruction of past environmental changes and diatom evolutionary trends." @default.
