- W228945547 abstract "This paper revisits the strategy for enhancing urban economic growth and development in view of the disproportionate share accounted for by urban cities in national economic growth and development, which has been estimated at 60 percent for some cities in the developing countries. While considerable efforts are currently expended at curtailing rapid growth in urbanisation, the general expectations are that many of the global cities will develop into mega-cities in the immediate distant future, and much of this manifestation is expected in the developing countries, especially in sub -Saharan Africa. However, the postulation is that the current and future growth potentials of urban cities are drastically limited by severe infrastructure constraints of which energy shortages and supply interruptions predominate. Such features that have become the defining characteristics of sub -Sahara African cities resulted from the unprecedented increases in energy use derived from the growth in demand for electrical goods and motor vehicles, in addition to the huge expansion of the service sector and light manufacturing. This reality has several dimensions to it; the lost output and severe restrictions on expansion in the urban economy has severe consequences for economic growth, employment and income. So is the strategy for meeting current and future energy needs, which will have a drastic impact on the environmental sustainability of sub Saharan African's built environment. While measures to reduce energy consumption is not a viable and serious option because of the likely threat to growth and development but planning for such huge growth in demand and devising appropriate strategies to meet such needs from renewable and decentralised sources presents a possible solution to the problem. This approach forms the basis of this paper, which seeks to analyse the energy balances of sub -Saharan African cities and the constraints posed thereof on growth and development of these cities upon which employment, income, and the likely success poverty alleviation measures crucially depends." @default.
