- W228957094 abstract "Entomopathogenic fungi offer a great opportunity for the management of pest insects and can easily be incorporated in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs for storage products. However, an understanding of the fungal virulence, physiology, field performance and ultimate commercialisation is the most important prerequisites for the production and application of these organisms. Thus, this study, evaluated of eleven Metarhizium anisopliae and six Beauveria bassiana isolates against the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais. The study aimed at identifying the most virulent locally available fungal isolates in Ethiopia. The virulence of the entomopathogenic fungi was determined using LT50 and percent mortality at the conidial concentration of 1 x 10 8 ml1. The most virulent isolates of M. anisopliae (PPRC-2, PPRC-14 and PPRC-51) and B. bassiana (PPRC-GG and PPRC-HH) caused 84.4% to 98.3% mortality. These isolates had LT50 ranging from 3.8 to 4.3 days. The most virulent isolate, PPRC-2, was further evaluated for its potential wider applications on maize, rice, wheat and sorghum grains. High mortality to the maize weevil was recorded 7-days after the fungus grown on rice (91% mortality) and maize (84% mortality) substrates were applied. Percentage grain protection ranged from 41% to 83% for fungal treatments. The highest proportion of damaged grains (8.25%) was recorded in the untreated check as compared to 1.25% to 3.5% grain damage in conidia treated grains. Weight losses of 0%, 0.73% and 0.71% were recorded for Primiphos methyl, rice and maize grain substrates treated grains, respectively. Therefore, the use of M. anisopliae should be promoted in managing S. zeamais." @default.
