- W2289713096 abstract "In a Quality (QMS) the main emphasis is almost invariably placed on procedures, standards, work instructions and forms. Triad's Quality team firmly believes that a QMS is in reality a Management System and that the emphasis should be more on management and less on quality. The fundamental premise is that it is man's nature to want to do a good job and, within his or her limits, to manage the work. This does not mean that everything has to be documented but it does mean that the right controls must be in place and at the appropriate points. If this is the case then quality will look after itself. Using this management approach Triad built a QMS which obtained certification to ISO 9001 against the TickJT scheme. Moreover, since certification the QMS has been used to improve the company's processes during a period in which it has more than doubled sales and staff while maintaining excellent profitability. Business analysis and the setting of objectives are paramount to Transactions on Information and Communications Technologies vol 11, © 1995 WIT Press, www.witpress.com, ISSN 1743-3517 16 Software Quality Business Success. However the key to this is knowing the essential processes and even more importantly what management controls must be applied. Documenting them in a way that allows change and ease of use is essential. Importantly, because software development tools and techniques are rapidly changing it is necessary to review and when necessary reiterate the process. Measuring the success of the controls is vital and this paper focuses on the ways in which Triad has learned how to do this. This has not been easy and the paper explores the problems and pitfalls in measuring often moving targets. The results are improved processes, including documentation of the processes themselves, and staff skills in carrying out such key tasks as estimating costs. The paper concludes by explaining how the emphasis placed on management has led to quality improvement, from junior staff all the way up to the managing director himself. Introduction Before producing a Quality (QMS) it is vital that the organisation's management not only understand what a QMS is and what it can be used for but also what it is not! A QMS is not about large volumes of written text on the microscopic definition of an organisation's processes. It is not about detailed explanations on how tasks are to be carried out. It is about providing controls to ensure that work is done to the appropriate level of quality. It must, however, also be suitable for daily use by intelligent and even more importantly trained staff. A QMS is the encapsulation of the management controls needed for helping staff deliver quality products and services in a repeatable manner. To apply these controls effectively requires writing them in the language and style of the staff who need to use them. To evaluate these controls objectively requires the collection of appropriate records on their Transactions on Information and Communications Technologies vol 11, © 1995 WIT Press, www.witpress.com, ISSN 1743-3517 Software Quality 17" @default.
