- W2290100514 abstract "Growth factors are a group of polypeptidic molecules. In general, they have low MW and they show specific and powerful actions in the regulation of target cells proliferation, death and motility. From cellular physiology's point of view, the growth factors are first messengers that bind membrane receptors, which translate the sign causing a reactions' cascade. It finishes in the regulation of some kinds of transcription factors and therefore in the genetic expression. Usually, these receptors are tyrosine kinases. Their secretion mechanism is frequently paracrine or autocrine, and occasion- ally it is endocrine. There are a lot of growth factors families, where these substances are joined. During the last fifty years, the growth factors have taken the main role in the paradigm to explain the tissue growth. Nowadays, the main use of the growth factors and their receptors, in medicine, is the determination through immunohistochemistry of tumour tissues, in order to make diagnostics, and, if possible, prognostics. However, their potential therapeutic applications are very vast, and, in a near future, they will be essential substances in the pharmaceutical industry. The main aim of this review is to show growth factors to biomedical graduates and students who are not specialists in cell biology." @default.
