- W2290138865 abstract "This chapter introduces techniques to improve database design by “counting,” using common structured query language (SQL) techniques. It discusses sampling, sampling techniques, and support for data sampling in the SQL language to show how this can speed the process. Counting is a key aspect of physical database design in terms of understanding: the absolute number of rows in a table or materialized view; and the ratio of unique values to total rows. The SQL language supports counting naturally through the COUNT and DISTINCT keywords, making it possible to exploit the power of SQL to help design the database. Care should be taken with system-level sampling, as it is prone to giving skewed results when used on clustered data. Extrapolating the number of distinct values in a set from a sample is nontrivial and even the best mathematical models for this have double-digit root mean squared (RMS) error. However, there are simple estimators that can be used to give a reasonable result and these are appropriate for rapid exploration of database design possibilities. The best database designs are always developed with the aid of counting." @default.
