- W2290498817 abstract "This paper reviews the research on self-controlled practice of motor skills. Studies consis- tently show that giving learners control over the practice situation has a beneficial effect on the acquisition of motor skills. However, this effect occurs with some delay, that is in a reten- tion test. Current explanations for this effect are rather vague and have been adapted from the verbal or cognitive learning domain. An explanation model will be proposed in which it is assumed that during self-controlled practice advantageous motivational processes and disad- vantageous cognitive processes are working in an antagonistic way and, therefore, offset each other regarding their effects on motor outcome. The benefits of self-control - e.g. more effec- tive processing of information or the use of individual learning strategies - only take effect when these processes become irrelevant in the retention test. Finally, hypotheses will be deduced which allow for an empirical examination of the model." @default.
