- W229086519 abstract "The cytoplasm in the freshwater coenocytic green alga Dichotomosiphon tuberosus always streams in a particular manner; multistriated and bi-directional, along the longitudinal axis of the algal body. Moreover, in response to light irradiation, the cytoplasm migrates toward the apical region and accumulates there, while it migrates toward the basal region in the dark. These movements were inhibited in the presence of colchicine (Maekawa et al. 1986). By immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, it was revealed that the reorganization of microtubule bundles in the endoplasm along the length of the alga is directly related to the translocation of the cytoplasm. In the dark, both small (composed of I to 15 microtubules) and medium bundles (16 to 30 microtubules) were evenly distributed along the whole length of the specimens (the dark type). Under light irradiation, a few small bundles were found in the apical region while large bundles (over 31 microtubules) as well as medium and small bundles, were found in the basal region (the light type). Since the number of endoplasmic microtubules increased in the basal region, microtubule polymerization may be involved in the large bundle formation. We found that one type was converted to the other type in response to light and dark treatments." @default.
