- W2291584059 abstract "In this chapter I suggest that specific similarities can be identified between Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle (1963) and Will Self’s The Book of Dave (2006). In particular, I focus on the manner in which both Vonnegut and Self examine how Western society engages with religion during a time of fear. For Vonnegut, writing in the 1960s (and 1970s), there was significant widespread fear concerning the scientific developments of the nascent military-industrial complex, exemplified primarily in the form of the Atomic Bomb. For Self, writing in a post-9/111 world, the prominent fear is that surrounding the contemporary “War on Terror.” Key to both authors’ exploration of religion is its use as a means of comfort. Indeed, such is Vonnegut’s particular interest in the soothing properties of religion in Cat’s Cradle that he invents a set of terms to define how it can be used in this capacity: “A wampeter2 is an object around which the lives of many otherwise unrelated people may revolve. The Holy Grail would be a case in point. Foma are harmless untruths, intended to comfort simple souls” (Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons [1974] xiii)." @default.
