- W2291864162 abstract "This is a descriptive, retrospective study, with a quantitative approach. It aimed at investigating accidents with biological material among nursing students from three higher education institutions in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil. A self-reported questionnaire addressing frequency, characteristics, use of protective equipment, and post-exposure conducts was used to that end. Three hundred fifty-five students participated in the 2007 survey. We identified 55 (15,5%) accidents; the main type was with intact skin (70.9%), followed by needlestick injuries (25.5%); blood was the material with highest presence during exposures (72.7%) and venipuncture removal ranked highest among the activities involved (18.2%). Students failed to wear personal protection and to report the accident at all times. These findings are concerning, not only because of accident frequency, but also because of inadequate conduct after accidental exposure. Education of professionals must receive special attention so that they can work safely in the future." @default.
