- W2292017358 abstract "Despite having been intensely studied, the SaudiArabian Palaeozoic clastic succession still provesto be difficult to correlate in both outcrop andsubsurface, due to the high maturity of sandstonesand scarcity of fossils. To better understandstratigraphic relationships and sedimentaryprovenance on a passive margin, Palaeozoicsandstones from two study areas in southern(Wajid area) and northern (Tabuk area) SaudiArabia have been analysed for whole rock andsingle grain geochemical data of detrital rutileand garnet and internal zircon morphology. Mostcommon geochemical discrimination diagramssuggest a craton interior dominated provenancein a passive margin tectonic setting for bothstudy areas, which is in accordance with thetectonic framework of the Arabian Plate duringthe Palaeozoic. Trace element ratios of Th/Scand Zr/Sc suggest sediment recycling in someunits. The data also tentatively suggest a change in provenance during the Devonian inthe Wajid area, which was not observed in theTabuk area. Internal zircon morphology obtainedfrom cathodoluminescence images suggesta dominant magmatic source, with a minorcontribution of metamorphic zircons in Wajid areasediments. Here, the distribution of morphotypesis remarkably similar throughout the succession.Data from the Tabuk area will be available at thetime of the conference. Rutile geochemistry fromthe Tabuk area suggest a mainly felsic source(e.g., micaschists, paragneisses, felsic granulites, granites), while southern rutiles are of mixedmafic and felsic origin. Zr-in-rutile thermometryreveals a high-T population in northern samples, that is absent in the Wajid area. Garnetswere only found in Late Palaeozoic (Devonianand Carboniferous-Permian) sandstones. Theircomposition is mostly similar in both study areas. Most garnets are derived from metasedimentaryor granitic rock. A minor population of high-grademetabasic garnets has been observed in the Tabukarea only." @default.
