- W229207934 abstract "Behavior began to be of great interest to psychologists during the first decade of the twentieth century. Experiments on animal learning led to the objective study of behavior, and in 1912 psychologists considered themselves, together with Watson, as ‘behavior men,’ disciples of modern psychology in opposition to introspectionism. Watsonian behaviorism, based on Thorndike and even Pavlovian conditioning, was received by psychologists as a new methodology. When Tolman or Koehler later introduced considerations about the purposeful nature of behavior (under the influence of Gestaltists), neo-behaviorism lost its strict objectiveness. Behaviorism was used in psychotherapies, even in handbooks of child education but was exposed to the temptation to look inside the ‘black box.’ During the 1950s, Skinner hardly criticized the mentalist deviation of psychology, and called for a return to behaviorism as a ‘philosophy of the science of behavior,’ with a strict epistemological objectiveness, an entire neglect of consciousness and with many applications in daily life. This appeal was much more successful in the US than in Europe. But to the end of the 1960s, the Skinnerian crusade ceased with the emergence of Chomskian psycholinguistics. Nowadays, although behaviorism is still applied to practical situations, frequently without any theoretical considerations, psychological laboratories no longer take it into account." @default.
