- W2292965710 abstract "The Telmatobius of the Ecuadorian Andes and their population decline. - We summarize and update current knowledge on the three endemic species of Ecuadorian Telmatobius from central and south Andes of Ecuador: T. cirrhacelis, T. niger and T. vellardi. We provide new distributional, ecological, and natural history data. Presence/absence data for 11 localities indicate absence of Telmatobius since 1994. T. cirrhacelis has not been collected since March 1987, despite 10 surveys at the type locality. The absence of T. niger is most striking; it has not been recorded since 1994, in spite of its historically wide distribution and despite nine surveys at localities with previous records. The information needed to evaluate the status of T. vellardi is scarce. Between 1985 and 1990, 11 individuals (juveniles, subadults and adults) with some type of disease or abnormality were found. They represent 31% of the specimens collected in that period. Additionally, 100% of tadpoles collected between 1989 and 1994 have anomalies. Diseases and anomalies were chytridiomycosis, extra limbs and limb malformations, epidermal disorders and other illnesses not yet identified. Analyses of climatic data of three meteorological stations from the Andes of southern Ecuador indicate the occurrence of extreme conditions of high temperature and low precipitation, and these data fit well with the time period when diseases and disappearances are reported. The influence of these diseases and/or climatic abnormalities in the Ecuadorian Andes may have been involved in the population declines and apparent extinctions of Telmatobius in Ecuador during the late 1980s and early 1990s." @default.
