English Language Teaching, Graduate Program, State University of Malang. Advisors: (I). Prof. H.M. Adnan Latief, M.A., Ph.D. (II). Dr. Gunadi H. Sulistyo, M.A. Key words: writing skills, example essay, mind mapping This Classroom Action Research is conducted to implement the strategy of mind mapping which is believed to solve the students’ writing problem of exploring and generating ideas which, in turn, improves their writing skills. The strategy of mind mapping is implemented in writing activities carried out by the fourth semester students of the English Department at FKIP Unisma in 2010-2011 academic year, comprising of 15 students. This study was conducted in two cycles consisting of four meetings in the first cycle and three meetings in the second cycle. Each cycle was ended with one additional meeting for writing test. The instruments used for collecting data are field notes, questionnaires, and example essay writing test. The result of the study shows that the use of mind mapping strategy could improve the students’ skills in example essay writing. The improvement is indicated by the achievement of the students’ example essay writing scores. In Cycle 1, 86% or 13 students got 73-79 and the last 14% or 2 students got 80 or more. At average, the students’ writing scores achieve 77.5. Since the criteria of success is when each student can achieve minimum 73, none of students was categorized failed. To ensure that the success of action in Cycle 1 reflected the true performance of students, Cycle 2 is implemented with some modifications of the strategy. In Cycle 2, 85% or 11 students got 73-79 and the last 15% or 4 students got 80 or more. On the average, the students’ writing scores in Cycle 2 achieve 78.4. Furthermore, the result of questionnaire also shows that the average 86% or 13 students have positive personal judgment toward the implementation of mind mapping, felt comfortable, felt that mind mapping is easy to implement, and consider to use it in the next writing activities. Based on the findings described above, the study concludes that, the use of the mind mapping strategy is effective and successful to improve the students’ ability in writing skills, particularly in terms of gathering ideas for the target topic, and the implementation of mind mapping gets positive personal judgments from the students to facilitate them in learning writing. In addition, the researcher also suggests several things. First, English teachers are suggested to employ this strategy to improve the students’ achievement in writing example essays. This would enrich the teacher’s technique especially in teaching writing. Second, for future researchers, further study could be conducted related to the use of mind mapping focusing on writing other types of texts and essays, other language skills, and also other field of disciplines." @default.
