- W2293891545 abstract "■■^■■■■■^■■■■■■■■■■■■iiHHMlHH SERAU, A. K. and CALLIARI, L. J., 2003. Changes of an Oceanic Beach Face in the Extreme South of Brazil, During the Passage of a Coastal Storm. Journal of Coastal Research, SI 35 (Proceedings of the Brazilian Symposium on Sandy Beaches: Morphodynamics, Ecology, Uses, Hazards and Management), 194-201. Itajai, SC Brazil, ISSN 0749-0208. In order to study some of the possible alterations undergone by an intermediate-reflexive beach face when subject to the approximation, evolution and subsidence of coastal storms following the movement of polar fronts in the extreme south of Brazil, a field experiment was conducted between the 26* and 29th of May, 1994, along a sampling grid of 990 m2. The area represented a section of the beach face, which had been undergoing erosion since February of 1 994. During the approximation of the event, the monitored portion of the beach face, ornamented with beach cusps, underwent a mild, homogeneous sedimentary erosion of about 19.90 m3. Yet, when under storm influence, a discreet erosion of the berm crest and a total erosion of the beach cusps on the middle and lower portions of the beach face were verified. A thickness equal or greater than 32.75 cm was removed as a result of the erosion of a beach cusp crest. It is estimated that the greatest storm-caused erosion took place during the 6 hours around high water, which coincided with the arrival of the event. Nevertheless, prevailing on the sampling grid, there was a net accretion of 1 32.5 m3, as a consequence of a mean daily deposition of 60 m3, resulting in a sedimentary package greater than 41 . 1 cm thick. On the other hand, the monitored after-storm interval indicated that the beach face acquired a discreet erosive trend of 23.42 m3. It is estimated that the net deposition found on the sampling grid during the event had occurred due to relatively more dissipative or concave profiles, developed prior to the arrival of the storm and/or during its possible first high-intensity phase. ADDITIONAL INDEX WORDS: Beach face changes, storm effects, bimodal sediments, intermediate beaches." @default.
