• W2293958199 abstract "Curtis and colleagues reject the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) strategies for scaling-up insecticide-treated net (ITN) coverage in Africa and propose instead a strategy of ITNs for all in rural However they seem to have misunderstood what RBM actually recommends including RBMs emphasis on the need for sustained subsidies. They also greatly underestimate the public health contribution made by commercial net markets in Africa China and Vietnam. Both Curtis et al and the RBM strategic framework cite China and Vietnam as successful models where high levels of ITN coverage have been sustained on a large scale and over many years. In both these countries insecticide treatment of nets is provided free of charge by the government. What Curtis et al fail to mention is that to take advantage of this service most people in malarious parts of China and Vietnam must buy their own nets from the unsubsidised commercial market; limited numbers of free nets are given to deprived and ethnic minority communities in high-risk areas.
