- W2295191036 abstract "This gender-based analysis is formed from qualitative and quantitative data on the motivations of unmarried adolescents in the Cameroon. Data were obtained from the 1995 Yaounde Family Formation Dynamics Study among 541 men and women aged 17-25 years. Surveys were conducted among a sample of 10 neighborhoods that reflected low middle and high socioeconomic status in the capital city of Yaounde. The sample included university students. Findings indicate that the urban norm supports premarital sexual relationships. Virgin women are considered outsiders and virgin men are unheard of. Multipartnerships are common. Relationships between young females and older well-off married men (sugar daddies) are a way of life. Sugar mommies are also sexually involved with young men. Sexual activity among young men is more accepted. Women with known multiple partners may be stigmatized. Young men are more likely to have multiple partners. Young women are more likely to have sugar daddies. Women use sexual relationships for networking and financial reasons. Women use sexual partnerships as a means of achieving a more modern life or rising out of poverty. Women also use premarital sexual relationships as a means of finding a husband and as a step toward marriage. Women may use premarital childbearing as a means of establishing emotional and economic links with a man and hoping that marriage will follow. Men are motivated by a desire for economic gain and for someone to cook for them. Men are more interested in premarital sexual relationships for gaining sexual experience and sexual satisfaction. Men place greater value on attractiveness than women. Men use multiple partnerships as a means of gaining social status and respect among peers. Peer pressure is an important reason for young men to initiate sex behavior. Multiple partners are used by men and women as protection against emotional hardship and mistrust. Conditions of economic decline are likely to increase premarital adolescent sex behavior." @default.
