- W229549910 abstract "This chapter focuses on organization of files. A file is a collection of data, each datum consisting of three elements: (1) unit, (2) property, and (3) measure. The set of data in a file associated with the one unit is a unit record or simply a record. A file may be designed so that every record in the file occupies the same amount of storage space or the size of individual records may be permitted to vary. A file must give reasonably fast access to a specified item of information contained in it. This calls for organization. An indexed document file is set up by storing the bibliographic information in order of document numbers and by creating a sorted list of index terms in which each term is followed by identifying numbers of all documents with which it is associated. The properties of the medium on which a file is stored affect the organization of the file and the procedures used in its processing. If a sequential file is stored in core memory, then logarithmic search is the proper procedure for gaining access to a record." @default.
