Drawing from a larger corpus of data, we explore how the children and their therapists go about negotiating and renegotiating problem behaviours. More specifically, in the data drawn upon, therapists used a social skills curriculum, ‘Superflex … A Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum’ (Madrigal & Winner, 2008), which included a shared vocabulary for talking about problematic behaviours. Drawing upon discursive psychology (DP) (Edwards & Potter, 1987) and conversation analysis (CA) (Sacks, 1992), we give particular attention to the lexical items related to the Superflex curriculum, as the character and his associated behaviours were often used to position particular behaviours as acceptable or unacceptable, within or outside of a child’s identity, and capable of being altered. With a broad focus on the ways in which ‘appropriate’ social behaviours were negotiated and constructed within this setting, we attend to how the lexical items (i.e. Superflex and the unthinkables) functioned to define and mark what counted as an appropriate behaviour, who was accountable for changing the ‘inappropriate’ behaviour, and what or who was responsible for causing inappropriate behaviour." @default.
