- W2296056258 abstract "In Australia researchers compared data on 113 randomly recruited women who while using oral contraceptives (OCs) still had an unplanned pregnancy with data on 109 OC users who did not become pregnant to determine the predisposing factors to OC failure. Both sets of women came to the Family Planning Association of Victoria clinic in metropolitan Melbourne to renew their OC prescription during March-September 1990 (pregnant OC users) and February- October 1991 (nonpregnant OC users). Most women in both groups had used OCs for at least 1 year. The pregnant group contained 5 times as many adolescent OC users as the nonpregnant group. Pregnant OC users were more likely to smoke than nonpregnant OC users (62% vs. 38.5%). Almost all OC users smoked fewer than 20 cigarettes/day. Smoking and being a teenager were the only 2 significant factors to OC failure among OC users. Almost all drank alcohol (85% of nonpregnant OC users and 78% of pregnant OC users). The incidence of predisposing factors associated with OC failure were very common in the 109 nonpregnant OC users. Specifically 49.5% missed at least 1 pill in the last 12 months. Most women (72.5%) had taken at least 1 pill more than 12 hours late. Antibiotic use other drug use diarrhea and vomiting were also common (55% 55% 43.1% and 35.8% respectively). Many women (30 27.5%) did not use any secondary precautions in the last 12 months of OC use indicating considerable lack of knowledge about how to prevent OC failure. These findings show the significance of biological variation between women in regard to their susceptibility to OC failure." @default.
