- W2296856849 abstract "As early as 1938 it was established that cattle were capable of synthesizing ascorbic acid, primarily in the liver. As a result, cattle generally do not have a dietary requirement for ascorbate. In cattle, ascorbate is important in biochemical reactions involving collagen cross-linking, hydroxylation of proline and lysine, and steroid and bile acid synthesis. Dietary ascorbate is quickly destroyed in the rumen. Several reports do exist of scurvy in calves. A number of factors affect plasma ascorbate concentrations in cattle, including sex, genetics, season of the year, diet, parturition, and various stressors. Immune function may be improved by supplementation with dietary ascorbate in calves (200 to 250 mg/day) or by injections in adult cattle. Management practices acting as stressors on cattle may result in a requirement for supplemental ascorbate at various times in the bovine life cycle." @default.
