- W2296927403 abstract "Introduction: Health inequity refers to health inequalities that are unjust according to some theory of social justice and is represented by inequalities in health status, health care utilization and health care financing. Few studies have been done to assess socioeconomic inequities in health in Nigeria. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess socioeconomic inequities in maternal health services in both public and private health facilities in Enugu State Nigeria. Methodology: A household questionnaire survey was conducted in 3 districts of Enugu East LGA to 730 females aged 15 and 49 years. We sought Information on their socioeconomic and demographic status and use of maternal health services the last time they were pregnant. Principal components analysis was used to develop a relative index of household socioeconomic status, with weighted scores of information on weekly food expenditure, education of the household head, and household assets. Findings: About 53.6% and 36.3% used private and public health care respectively while 10.1% did not use either. Utilization is worse among poorer families than among relatively rich for both public and private facilities. For antenatal clinic, only 24.6% of respondents in poorest quartile and 55.3% in the least poor quartile used a public health facility with equity gap of 2.25, while 32.9% of poorest and 45.1% of least poor used private facilities with equity gap of 1.37. For delivery services, 28.6% of respondents in the poorest quartile and 37.5% in the least poor quartile used public facilities with equity gap of 1.3 , while 19.6% of the poorest and 47.2% of the least poor used private facilities creating equity gap of 2.41. 75% of those who did not use any health facility were in the lowest 2 quartiles. Conclusion: Inequity exists in use of both public and private health care. Such evidence for health inequities should inform such programmes aimed at making pregnancy safe so that they include strategic components aimed specifically at keeping inequity to a minimum." @default.
