- W2296927680 abstract "The study assessed the impact of damming on water quality and macroinvertebrate assemblages. It also assessed the response of macroinvertebrate-based indices of water quality to damming. Macroinvertebrate community and physicochemical variables data were collected from 86 sites. Twenty-nine sites downstream of dams were compared with 27 sites above impoundments and 30 sites on nearby unregulated streams. Of the downstream sites, 13 were situated 1 km from a dam. A decrease in temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and total dissolved solids was observed in sites immediately downstream of impoundments. Macroinvertebrate community structure and South African Scoring System (SASS) scores closely followed the damming-induced changes in water quality. However, water quality variables, macroinvertebrate community structure and SASS scores reverted back to typical upstream conditions in distances around 1 km from dams. Stream recovery from dam-induced changes was demonstrated with streams recovering at distances around 1 km from the point of regulation in corroboration with predictions of the serial discontinuity concept (SDC). These dam-induced changes also reflected themselves in SASS scores suggesting potential usefulness of SASS in monitoring ecological integrity of tropical rivers following disturbances like damming.ResumeCette etude a evalue l'impact de la construction de barrages sur la qualite de l'eau et sur les assemblages de macro-invertebres. Elle a aussi evalue la reponse d'indices de la qualite de l'eau bases sur les macro-invertebres a la construction de barrages. Nous avons aussi collecte des donnees sur la communaute des macro-invertebres et sur des variables physico-chimiques sur 86 sites. 29 sites en aval des barrages ont ete compares a 27 sites en amont et a 30 sites sur des cours d'eau voisins non regules. Des sites en aval, 13 se situaient a moins d'un km d'un barrage et les 16 autres a plus d'un km. Nous avons observe une diminution de la temperature, de l'oxygene dissous, de la conductivite et des solides totaux dissous sur les sites immediatement en aval des barrages. La structure de la communaute des macro-invertebres et les resultats du South African Scoring System (SASS) suivaient etroitement les changements induits par les barrages dans la qualite de l'eau. Cependant, les variables de la qualite de l'eau, la structure de la communaute des macro-invertebres et les resultats SASS revenaient aux conditions normales de l'amont a une distance d'environ un km des barrages. Le retablissement des cours d'eau suite aux changements induits par les barrages a ete prouve avec des cours d'eau qui se retablissaient a environ un km de distance du point de regulation, conformement aux previsions du Serial Discontinuity Concept (SDC). Ces changements induits par les barrages se refletent aussi dans les resultats SASS, ce qui suggere l'utilite potentielle du SASS dans le suivi de l'integrite ecologique des cours d'eau tropicaux suite a des perturbations telles que la construction de barrages." @default.
