The seafront area in the Island of Santa Catarina: appropriation and configuration in the expansion of the city of Florianopolis. Journal of Coastal Research, SI 35 (Proceedings of the Brazilian Symposium on Sandy Beaches: Morphodynamics, Ecology, Uses, Hazards and Management), 516-524. Itajai, SC Brazil, ISSN 0749-0208. This study was made in the artificial drainage channels of Santos city initially constructed to assure the pluvial flux and, nowadays they receive clandestine domestic wastes at several points. A lock divides the internal water of each channel from the external region, on the beaches, a recreational zone. At the middle of the Santos Bay there is a submarine sewage emissary that disposes the domestic waste to the seawater, however, this disposal is questioned about its efficiency to dillute and to disperse the wastes and to avoid the return of the effluents to the beaches. Each artificial channnel is divided into two sectors: internal (I) and external (E), by a lock, which prevents the contact between the internal and external waters. Eventually, these locks have to be opened in order to prevent floods in the city. In four years (1 997-2000), during spring and summer both sectors were sampled. Dissolved inorganic nutrients exhibited large seasonal variations concerning the two sectors (0.00 |iM to 79.61 (iM-N and 0. 1 5 |iM to 1 1 .64 ?iM-P), these values greatly contribute to the eutrophication of the system. Total and feacal coliforms were determined during 1998 e 1999, and presented high concentrations, always above the limits estimated by national laws concerning the balneai quality of seawaters (FC>1 ,000/1 00 mL and TC >5 ,000/1 00 mL). Finally, sources of other kinds of contaminants which might put the quality of the reagional beaches in risk are present all the time in the adjacent locations of the beaches and in the middle of the Bay.
