- W2297119673 abstract "Recent years showed a constantly increasing demand of high performing conjugated materials for technological applications including displays, solar cells, and field effect transistors. Plastic electronics are considered to be promising because of their low-cost deposition techniques and compatibility with flexible substrates. Restricting to the field of displays and shading technologies, organic electrochromic materials (OEMs) offer a low power input and potentially low-cost solution for smart windows, electrochromic sunglasses, electrochromic paper and displays. The organic electrochromic palette nowadays includes all primary colors as well as neutral tints, an achievement ascribed to the successful donor-acceptor (D-A) strategy. However, the most demanding applications of OEMs require materials possessing a highly transparent and completely colorless bleached state. In this respect D-A polymers are not yet fully satisfactory because they are highly transmissive in the oxidized state but not completely colorless. The high transmissivity and complete colorlessness in the bleached state are of outmost importance for applications like ophthalmic and smart windows requiring a high transmittance and almost no color distortion in the bleached state. Also, the synthetic procedure leading to efficient D-A polymers is somewhat complex. The side chain functionalization of a poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) backbone with a discrete monodisperse electrochromic single molecule (DE), is a viable alternative to DA polymers. In this case the final electrochromic performance of the polymer is the sum of that of PEDOT and of the DE. Amongst the DEs that have been employed for this purpose, naphthalenediimides, are neutral and UV absorbing at potentials in which PEDOT is oxidized and they do not add any contribution to Vis absorption in the bleached state. We here present the design, synthesis, polymerization and full electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical characterization of a new naphtalendiimide-containing fully cross-linked DE electrochromic material (EDOT-NCTI, see Fig. 1)." @default.
