- W2297317621 abstract "This chapter presents the possibilities of physical exercise in patients having cardiovascular disorders. Physical activity requires increased mechanical activity of skeletal muscle. For proper functioning, skeletal muscles require increased oxygen and fuel to produce increased activity. The cardiovascular system normally demonstrates an immediate response to exercise. This response includes local alterations in the blood flow and vascular resistance that evoke reflexes that stimulate the heart to provide an increased cardiac output. Because of this inevitable challenge to the cardiovascular system by exercise, patients with cardiac disorders often first manifest symptoms with exercise. There is ample physiological evidence suggesting that an exercise program improves the cardiovascular response to work; however, this response is largely because of an improved efficiency of skeletal muscle. Currently, it is not clear whether the moderate exercise programs provided to the cardiac patient are sufficient to provide this type of improved skeletal muscle performance." @default.
