- W2297361331 abstract "Exposure of community samples to levels of trauma capable of producing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be in the range of 30% to 40%, whereas PTSD in the community approximates 10% in some studies. Specific traumatized populations, such as victims of rape or motor vehicle accidents, both develop PTSD at a higher rate and often display additional characteristics unique to their trauma (for example, “re-visualization” among car accident victims). Certain occupations are also risky for PTSD: police work, fire fighters, and certain health care workers, for example. Catastrophic medical illness such as burns or myocardial infarction can produce typical PTSD symptoms even though, in the latter case, the trauma is internal. In acute civilian trauma it seems possible to predict outcome to some extent by recognizing that symptoms persisting after 3 months are likely to be long lasting." @default.
