- W2297376031 abstract "Cleaning of ultrafiltration membrane fouled with proteineous solution is an important operation component in membrane applications in dairy, particularly milk and whey production industry. Proper selection of cleaning agent and optimum operating condition lead to reduced overall operational cost and improved environmental impact. This study applied four types of cleaning detergent (acid, base, surfactant and enzyme) to evaluate the cleaning efficiency and to investigate the mechanisms of cleaning for each type of detergent for polysulfone (PS) and polyethersulphone (PES) membranes fouled with binary protein mixture of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and p-lactoglobulin (bLG) and sweet whey powder solutions respectively. Higher cleaning efficiencies were achieved with surfactant and enzyme cleaners for cleaning both PS and PES membranes fouled with both binary mixture and whey solution respectively than with base and acid cleaners, while base cleaner NaOHperformed better than HCl. The results demonstrated that cleaning through pH reversal mechanism (in acid and base cleaning process, by shifting the pH to and from the protein isoelectric point) is less effective than cleaning mechanisms with surfactant and enzyme. Better flux recovery with NaOH than HCl was resulted from higher range of pH reversal with NaOH. Surfactant acts as solubilising agent during cleaning and enzyme which involves accumulation or deposition on the protein deposits before hydrolyze protein from the fouling layer are recommended in cleaning of membranes fouled by protein solutions, although optimum operating condition for enzyme cleaner needs to be considered as enzyme deposits on the fouling layer could contribute to increase in filtration resistance." @default.
