Stenbaek (eds), Voices and Images of Nunavimmiut Vol 6: Environment Part 2: Contaminants, Land Use and Climate Change (Montreal and Kingston: IPI Press/McGill-Queen's University Press, 2013), 192 pp. Cased. $27.95. ISBN 978-0-9829155-5-4.It remains true that Yukon, North-west Territories and Nunavut continue to receive the bulk of writings about the Canadian Arctic; Nunavik (Quebec north of the 55° parallel) is a Cinderella in comparison. These are the latest two volumes in a series which restores the balance a little, and has previously covered: (1) Stories & Tales, (2) Way of Life, (3) Health, and (4) Children & Youth. They contain just over 100 short articles, averaging three to four pages each, which have been selected from 'pieces' published by the Makivik Corporation between 1975 and 2010 in its newsletters and magazines - Taqlarit, Atvaqnik and principally the Makivak Magazine. The Makivik Corporation was established under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement ( JBNQA) of 1975. It is responsible for the administration of Inuit lands in Nunavik, and also for the use of compensation payments under JBNQA. 'Nunavimmiut' is Inuktitut for an inhabitant of Nunavik, and the content of both volumes focuses on how the Inuit still depend upon the environment. Readers unfamiliar with the geography of Nunavik are spared the chore of continually consulting an atlas with English and Inuktitut spelling of place-names, as both volumes contain an excellent map combining both scripts, and there is the bonus of a coloured map in English on the beautifully-designed dust covers. Each volume has a perceptive and scene-setting introduction; Volume 5 by Johnny Peters, Makivik Vice President of Renewable Resources, and Volume 6 by Sheila Watt-Cloutier of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC).Volume 5 contains two sections - 'Renewable Resources' and 'Protection of Wildlife' - which, almost inevitably, overlap at the margins in material covered. 'Renewable Resources' introduces an extremely wide range dealing with marine mammals and fish, but most material covers the James Bay agreement and general issues of renewable resource planning. The 'Protection of Wildlife' section concentrates more on particular species - beluga whales, bowhead whales, walrus, Arctic char, Canada geese, and musk oxen. An important theme for fish resources is enhancement of habitat, e.g. by engineering works on rivers, and release of eggs and fry. Discussions on whales, polar bear and musk-ox highlight the differences in view between Inuit harvests, and attempts by government and wildlife NGOs to impose quotas or ban the har vest altogether. …" @default.
